Celebrate 30 years of the Roy Hargrove Big Band with a special film screening of their legendary 1995 Washington Square Park debut at the Greenwich Village Panasonic Jazz Festival and witness jazz history in the making. The festival presented the first opportunity for Roy to bring his own big band to the stage, resulting in a powerhouse ensemble blending the energy of Roy’s celebrated quintet with the full force of a 17-piece big band.
The concert features an all-star lineup, including special guests David “Fathead” Newman (tenor sax, flute), Jerry Gonzales (congas), and Miles Griffith (vocals), alongside jazz heavy weights Stephen Scott, Karriem Riggins, Reuben Rogers, Russell Malone, Peven Everett, Riley Mullins, Darren Barrett, Ron Blake, Sherman Irby, Jesse Davis, Vincent Herring, Myron Waldon, Andre Hayward, Frank Lacy, and Jamal Haynes.
The screening will be held at The Jazz Gallery, the club Roy co-founded and the place where the big band has their monthly residency.
Original festival producer James Browne along with the filmmaker and a few other guests who were at the concert that day will be opening the evening with a short introduction and Q & A before the feature presentation of the 1995 concert. Join us as we celebrate the birth of the Roy Hargrove Big Band and its enduring impact and legacy.
