We had an amazing time at the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier High School!
It was a full day of clinics, followed by masterclasses led by the Roy Hargrove Big Band. The festival culminated in outstanding performances by the student bands under the direction of Nic Meyer, Director of Jazz Ensembles. Then, at 8:00 PM, it was time for the main event: the Roy Hargrove Big Band featuring Bobby Watson - and it was epic 🔥🔥🔥
The entire house was on its feet as the 1,200-seat Gaffney Auditorium turned into one big celebration. That electricity was a direct reflection of the music and energy onstage; the musicians were locked in, and you could feel the camaraderie. The artists onstage represented not only Roy’s history and his music, but also the direct lineage of jazz itself. Many of them have played together for decades - both in Roy’s ensembles and in other legendary groups, including the Jazz Messengers. They came together to celebrate Roy, his music, and the friendship they share, and you could truly feel the love in the room.
We couldn’t be happier to share Roy’s music and spirit with students in this way. Seeing their engagement and commitment is deeply inspiring - these young musicians are well on their way. We’re grateful to be part of that journey, and to help pass on the history, integrity, and tradition of this music so directly.
Thank you to Nic Meyer and New Trier Township High School for making this possible - and for making us feel so welcome. We had a fantastic time!
