The Roy Hargrove Big Band is excited to partner up with Harlem School of the Arts for a summer big band intensive designed to inspire and educate the next generation of jazz musicians. This unique program brings together the legendary sound and legacy of Roy Hargrove with the vibrant educational community at Harlem School of the Arts.
Lead by the Roy Hargrove Big Band this intensive offers students a rare opportunity to learn directly from original members of the acclaimed ensemble. All of the instructors have performed and recorded with Roy’s various groups - including his iconic quintet, RH Factor and Crisol - and currently serve as faculty at prestigious institutions such as Juilliard, Montclair State, and Northwestern University.
The students will get to immerse themselves in Roy’s uncompromising approach to music and learn directly from these seasoned professionals - masters in their own right - who will share not only their deep musical knowledge but also their insights into what it truly takes to play his music. Roy was a trailblazer who bridged generations and genres, from bebop and blues to funk, hip-hop, and Afro-Cuban rhythms. His guiding principle was always to put the music first, regardless of genre or circumstance. We are excited to continue his legacy by passing on his passion and values to young musicians through this intensive.
The Big Band Intensive is made possible through the collaborative efforts of Shelly Bauer from Harlem School of the Arts and Aida Brandes-Hargrove of the Roy Hargrove Big Band. Together, they are committed to delivering a rich, transformative experience for all participants.
